Platform on new construction, renovation, restoration and transformation
The new sports complex in Workum is an absolute eye-catcher. The special roof shape, the warm ribbed masonry and above it the steel plates with their vertical lines create a sturdy whole.
The construction of the swimming pool took place on the initiative of the Workum citizens. These wanted a swimming pool that was sustainable and energy efficient. An adjustable bottom over a third of the pool had to make the pool suitable for all kinds of users. The citizens also made special demands on the builder. For example, he had to employ local people in the construction, so that the building project would create employment and add something to the Frisian economy. It was Jorritsma Bouw who met all these requirements and was awarded the work.
The sports complex contains a sports hall (27 x 44 m), a competition pool (25 x 15 m) and a catering facility with a generous terrace. The swimming pool and other facilities - except for the sports hall locker rooms - are located on the second floor. "Parents and cheering audiences will then have a view of the pool, sports hall and sports fields from the catering facility," points out Addy Sonneveld, project manager of Jorritsma Bouw.

The shell for the pool was constructed of precast concrete. A steel structure with sandwich panels was chosen for the superstructure, and the roof was constructed in steel plate. "So far, everyday activities," Sonneveld says. "But the construction of the swimming pool was anything but mundane. We had to deal with high waterproofing requirements, humidity and pool temperatures. Because of the high humidity, the pool had to be built airtight; that required expert attention to the connections and gap seals. To make the property energy efficient, solar panels, a heat pump and a water treatment process were installed."
For the specialized work, Jorritsma partnered with specialized chain partners. Installer Hellebrekers Technieken, for example, was responsible for the installations as a subsidiary contractor. Special products - such as the moveable floor - also provided new faces on the construction site. "Fortunately, the entire project was worked out in 3D (BIM)," Sonneveld explains. "With this interface management, recesses, air ducts and supply and drainage could be effortlessly coordinated. This working method prevents miscommunication and ensures consistency between the Schedule of Requirements, expectations and execution. With BIM you build better, more efficiently, transparently, economically more advantageous and faster."
"The Foundation with volunteers also attended the construction meetings," Sonneveld continued. "The representatives of the Foundation had the right construction experience and definitely added value here." The social commitment with which the construction project was carried out suited Jorritsma Bouw like a glove. Contributing to local employment is standard for it. CO2-reducing construction by limiting the number of transport movements is a constant point of attention for her. Sonneveld: "Among other things, we are affiliated with Bewuste Bouwers. This construction management is based on the pillars 'conscious', 'safe', 'environment', 'cared for' and 'social'."
